Why cross-chain gaming is the need of the hour?
Web 3 Gaming is slow to capture the attention of gamers. This pace can threaten the pace of the blockchain gaming adoption rate. The major roadblock to this is single-chain gaming. Letting go of the concept of interoperability, Web 3 game developers have decided to become gatekeepers, focusing on the growth of a single chain.
While many consider it a wise decision from a financial point of view, relying on a single chain creates a sense of exclusivity that contradicts the idea of blockchain gaming. It must be inclusive, and cross-chain gaming is the only thing that can make it possible.
The Future Must be Decentralized When it Comes to Gaming — And Interoperability Can Pave the Way
Permissionless blockchain aims to make decentralized data handling possible and make assets truly ownable by the participants. However, some biggest metaverse projects — like Meta, have taken a centralized approach, leaving many out of this space.
Such a case against a corporate-controlled metaverse gets strengthened once we consider that after becoming Meta, Facebook has lost $650 billion.
While many consider the “over” bullishness towards the blockchain behind Meta’s failure, the real reason was the lack of interoperability.
Interoperability is how gaming can become more decentralized, more inclusive, and add more elements to blockchain games, making them more attractive for Web 2 gamers.
What Benefits can Cross-Chain Gaming Bring to Web 3 Gaming?
The concept of blockchain gaming was borne out of NFTs, and NFTs emerged from the Ethereum blockchain. However, after the emergence of other blockchains — layer 2 applications conceived to deal with the scalability issues of the Ethereum chain — Web 3 gaming added support for cross-chain. Enabling that facility is a bridge that allows the exchange of information from two or more blockchains. And the reason cross-chain is proving to be more beneficial are as follows:
1. Reducing the Transaction Fee
Relying on a single chain like Ethereum means paying a hefty gas fee just to complete the transactions. And multiple transactions have to be done in Web 3 gaming. Without a proper cross-chain element, the games’ costs go up. That expensiveness deters non-crypto gamers from entering the Web 3 space. With cross-chain, games can take advantage of better gaming solutions.
A major example of this is Axie Infinity. The developers created Ronin as a layer-2 solution solely for gaming purposes, and going multi-chain helped Axie Infinity become more affordable and have higher transaction fees.
2. Creation of GameFi
The concept of GameFi was only conceived with a multiple-chain approach. GameFi is a fusion of multiple concepts of blockchain on one platform. They include DeFi, NFTs, and Play-to-Earn. The multiple elements working together must work well, and cross-chain makes it possible.
If Web 2 is to adopt Web 3 gaming, they must get a taste of what Web 3 gaming has to offer. With that in mind, GameFi is the vehicle that Web 3 gaming needs to become larger and more inclusive toward all.
3. Better gameplay and games
To this day, non-crypto gamers are willing to sit on the sidelines regarding Web 3 gaming; they are right in their choice. The “gameplay” part of blockchain gaming is slow in development. However, with a multi-chain approach, we have a system where another deals with the weaknesses of one chain. It forms a symbiotic relationship between chains where they complement each other — making better gameplay possible in gaming.
